about Honda Element
I'm considering a Honda Element or a Subaru Forester for a next car purchase - any suggestions?

Both are quirky cars and both are very good vehicles.
The Subaru Forester recently won the Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the year and has been a hit with customers and critics alike. With the strong 2.5 liter boxer engine (turbo is an option) the base Subaru is more powerful than the Honda, with the turbo version much more so. The Forester would be considered a sportier vehicle too.
All road ability will gear towards the Subaru as well. It has a higher ground clearance (8.9") vs. the Honda at 6.9". The Forester comes standard with their asymmetrical all wheel drive, while the Element has AWD as an option.
The Honda Element is a box and therefor is not the quietest car on the road. The Subaru is much more aerodynamic so you will get a quieter ride on freeway.
When considering the "utility" aspects of the two vehicles the Subaru is a very capable hauler with 63 cubic feet of space (with the back seats down). However the Element is significantly larger with 74.6 cubic feet of storage. And remember that comment about the Honda being a box? Things just "fit" in the Honda better.
So, this is my poor man's review of two very different cars. On the surface the Forester is a superior vehicle on almost all counts. Plus, it has tons of character with the flat-4 engine and just being a Subaru.
I drive a 2001 BMW X5 with the 4.4 V8. It is a great vehicle. I am dying to get an Element SC. Soon.
