I'm a freelance writer and the publication just paid me twice for the same set of stories. Should I keep the money?

This is the 3rd time they've done this to me and I've returned the money before and they told me they couldn't believe I was returning it. Should I just keep it this time? I'm getting really tired of having to return money that I could easily keep without reprimand.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think that if you are getting tired of this repetitive situation, contact the responsible about two points:

1) Return the money

2) State that this is the last time you'll do that!

Then if this repeats a fourth (fifth ...) time, you can keep the money with your conscience in peace :)

I will say just phone and and contact the accounting departments Accounts payable manager. Tell this manager you received the money. Since this is repeating, ask for an explanation. Then according to their response, you can decide what you want to do with it.
You never know, when is the bad luck hits you. Since your writing career is more important to you, you have to think really careful about keeping this money.

If they use the same articles more than once they are entitled to pay you for them again if that is their policy.

If they catch their error (if it is an error) later they'll just bill you for the money. Best to return it (or not cash it).

Contacting their AP dept is wise. You can also notify them in writing that if they pay you for the same article again that you won't return it. That way they have something on file (and so do you) if it's contested. Assuming you want to stay on good terms with them.

1. Based on the principle of Karma, which implies a perfect balance in the universe which rewards/punishes you based on your actions--no.

2. Under principles of Mind Science, you also impair your subconscious with feelings of guilt and wondering if you will get caught. Where you mention they couldn't believe you returned it--you also gained credibility and standing in their minds. If you feel better about yourself you will have more creativity to earn more.

3. There is the Christian principle of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Would you like someone to overcharge you and not tell you later when they discover it?

The basic idea common to a lot of philosophies is that our wealth and abundance flows to us from the surrounding universe, just as the basic necessities, food, water and air do. Granted that was simpler before tribes & governments came into being, and work was added to the equation. At the opposite end of the spectrum--who believes one can get ahead in life taking advantage of people or by crime? Most negative schemes usually fail at the end, or the consequences catch up to them.

When you "do the right thing," the positive energy you get in return opens you up to the latent blessings waiting to be received.

I would return the money again and tell them next time I may not. I have been ripped off as a writer (recently)and wanted my money. It goes both ways I would return their money to them.
