I'll be taking an exam in a couple of months. Are there any vitamin supplements I could take to increase/boost my mental capacity?

-do you have experience taking them?
-where can I buy it?
-are there side effects?

Thank you.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Ginseng and Ginkgo biloba are the best suppliments with the fewest side effectes that I've found.
Individuals who use ginseng often report that they feel more alert. Several studies report that Asian ginseng can modestly improve thinking or learning. Early research shows that Asian ginseng may improve performance on such things as mental arithmetic, concentration, memory, and other measures. More research in this area, although not easy to do, would be helpful. Effects have also been reported for the combination use of Asian ginseng withGinkgo biloba.

On the other hand, scientific studies thus far do not support the theory that this herb changes your mood if you are otherwise healthy.

Mental performance has been assessed using standardized measurements of reaction time, concentration, learning, math, and logic. Benefits have been seen both in healthy young people and in older ill patients. However, some negative results have also been reported. Therefore, although the sum total of available scientific evidence does suggest some effectiveness of short-term use of Asian ginseng in this area, better research is necessary before a strong recommendation can be made.

Here are the herbs that I use to increase memory/brain function:

Ginkgo Biloba
Gotu Kola (improves circulation, but can be sedative)
Ginseng (there are different kinds, so some research to figure out which one is best for you...)
Peppermint (small bit)
source(s):
The Healing Herbs by Michael Castleman
Herbally Yours by Penny Royal (no, really, that's her name)

I don't know about vitamin supplements, but here are a couple of other suggestions that I believe help.

Aromatherapy. Use Rosemary or peppermint essential oils when studying and then take a small sample (a few drops on a card) with you to your exam. Science shows that memory is connected to our sense of smell. Make sure you use essential oils and not "fragrances" there is a difference.
(I did a project on aromatherapy years ago, so I don't have online sources for this information.)

Also, Baroque music and Mozart has shown to improve retention when played when you are studying. I actually found a source that talks about this connection here:

When I taught, I often played this music for my students. They complained at first, but soon started to request it as they realized it helped them.

I found some great music on ITunes years ago. Here is a link to one of the albums by Arcangelos Chamber Ensemble. They have several others for motivation and thinking that are also very good.

You've got a couple of months? I'd say use that time to study your material thoroughly and regularly. Repetition and consistency are the best ways to speed learning.

Also do what you can to keep a regular schedule, get enough sleep, and eat right, maybe get a little bit of exercise.

All these things will make a much bigger difference than taking a supplement. If you are overdoing it on the caffeine, getting very little sleep, no amount of ginko biloba in the world is going to help you.

Day of exam, make sure to eat a good breakfast and keep to your normal routine as much as possible.

That will make a much bigger difference than taking a supplement, IMHO. Sure, take something if you want but don't neglect the basics.
