There are two options available which my company helped 2 listed company with 5000+ staffs to replace their exchange.
The first option is @mail (or: atmail) which is an Australian based software
The second option is zimbra.
Both work great but need expertise on Linux platform to build a proper solution.
Compare with MS Exchange, the hardware requirement is much less complex and the TCO significantly reduce.
