If my 51 year old timid school teacher wife came to me and said she wanted a Harley, I would lose my mind jumping up and down for joy. I can't even imagine the fun we would have tooling out to Strugis or down to Daytona.
Thing is, both of my wife's parents were members of a Harley club in Chicago in the 1950's. They went to rodeos and rallys and races, back when it was just starting out, so we could easily mark it up, as Hank Williams would say, to family tradition. I might get a trike or something with a side car. We would have the time of our lives.

M$If you resort to manipulation (withholding affection, threatening to leave them, etc.) you will damage, or possibly end, the relationship. Discussing your concerns about their safety and the practicality of motorcycle ownership are fair game. Motorcycles may be fun, but fatality rates are significantly higher in accidents, and they're far from fun in wet weather. They can be an expensive toy to maintain as well.
If they chose to get a motorcycle anyways, buy some safety gear as a gift. It shows you care without smothering their individuality.
