If your job is your hobby and your hobby is your job (ie computer related), other than your family and friends, how to you occupy your time?

Tip for best answer: M$8.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I fit into this category, because I make my living writing, which I love. So I work for myself at home and spend a significant amount of time on the computer. But when I'm not working at my "hobby," I do a lot of volunteering with our county's Search and Rescue team, including going on missions and doing a lot of training. I love it! Each mission is a new and different adventure, not to mention an opportunity to help people, and the training provides so many opportunities to learn new skills and improve on others. So I find SAR very satisfying and motivating, not to mention great exercise in a lot of cases. I love to hike and backpack, but SAR gets me out there -- in the canyons and on the mountains and in the desert and the forest -- even more. And in all kinds of weather. It's a great balance for my sedentary work.

I also like to hike just for fun as well as run and do Jazzercise. So I try to spend as much of my non-working/non-writing time being active. But I also like to find a patch of warm sun and sit in it with my dog and a good book or just my imagination.

Here's a picture from one of our Search and Rescue missions. The man in the Stokes litter had fallen down a slope and broken his ankle...

I think a lot of us find ourselves in this position. If you're very lucky, you get to make a living doing what you love. Of course, this also means that your passion can become your entire existence.

I spend a ton of time on the computer for work, and I often park myself in front of the computer for additional hours on nights and weekends to unwind. To combat the screen time, I force myself to get outside -- go for a walk, read a book on the porch, create an excuse to get out of the house. It not only gives you a chance to refresh, but it can also sometimes lead to finding inspiration in places you didn't expect.

1. Clean the freakin' house.
2. Watch episodes of "Top Chef" and wish I could cook like that but make absolutely no effort to do so.
3. Clean the freakin' house again.
4. Read books on my hobby because it never ever bores me.
5. Stop cleaning the freakin' house.

Hope that made you laugh and remember, if your job is online, go offline and read about stuff online. That's what I do!

I work as a freelance writer. Just got a book on marketing for SEO for websites that I plan to put up for myself, again, more writing.

I clean the house and spring clean to get rid of things I don't need to make room for new stuff that has to do with...writing.

I will never stop reading about writing, my work and hobby, however, you have to get outside and see the real world every now and again.

I have four kids so my free time is pretty much spent as the Dad taxi service and on the off chance that appointments don't overlap and we all have some free time we like to go swimming and hiking.

Outdoor exercise is especially important for those of us who work at home.

I work online as a Freelance Writer. I was born with exceptional typing skills since I was a child and, combining that with my terrible handwriting, meant that I type a whole lot more than I write. When I was out looking for jobs the old fashioned way, my application usually didn't blow employers away because they had to squint and cringe just to read my chicken scratch. Not that I blame them......

While I would love to make a lot more than I do, I couldn't trade this for anything in the world, but the downside is a life where there isn't a ton of socialization. That's why I feel that if you do work at home, it is still very important to get out of the house, enjoy some outdoor hobbies, hang out with friends, anything to relax and enjoy the times when you aren't working.

What I love doing in my spare time is following sports. It is the perfect relaxer for all things of real life and it is a great way to focus your energy into something that you can just relax and have fun with, despite whether the team you root for is good or bad! Other activities I like to do are playing video games, listening to music, and doing some yard work.

In the end, it's all a matter of what you like to spend your time on that isn't considered work. Just have fun with it!

You aren't just restricted to one hobby, you know. If you have a job in video editing, and you like video editing, it isn't a set rule you can't like making music, developing software, or even making art. You can have a single job but several hobbies.

A great way to expand what you do with your time if you spend your days with friends, family, and enjoying a job with such pasion is to consider stepping outside your comfort zone. A great way to meet new people is to look to clubs. Thinks like a boot camp on the weekends to get in shape, or even explore multiple groups on meetup.com. These groups are in a variety of interest, and in a wide range of cities, and best of all it's free to join. It can be hard to get out and meet new people, but confidence in yourself and how great of a person you are can go a long way in having that first conversation in a new setting like a group can help you make new friends and expand your interests.Meetup.com is also a great place to start since everyone on there is in the same situation as you, looking for new friends and new interests. If a work related expansion is what your after, try Toastmasters or Meeting Professionals for a group of individuals in the same career as you so you can not only make new friends, but advance your career.

Good Luck
