If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would splurge on?

After paying off debt and taking care of family ... what would you do?!

I would buy a new car - not for me though. For my husband, and trust me, this would make me happier than any gift I could purchase for myself. He's sacrificed so much for me and our children - stayed at a unstimulating job so we could have good insurance, shifted his work hours to 6:00 - 2:30 so he can get the kids off the bus rather than pay for aftercare, and even support me financially in starting my own nonprofit consulting business in lieu of my full-time salary.

I would love to get him out of his practical car that he inherited from his father (it's fine but not fun). What does he really want? Not a Porsche, a Ferrari or a BMW - he wants a muscle car! I'd love to surprise him with one and I'll stick with the mini-van. It would finally be my turn to be the practical one!

While I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali (West Africa) I had occasion to visit the zoo that was in the capital. As far as I know, that zoo, which is attached to some lovely botanic gardens, was originally built by the French when they had control of Mali. So, it has some beautiful landscaping, gorgeous old trees, and large enclosures... which have tiny wire cages shoved into the middle of them.
It is just too expensive for them to upkeep it properly, and funds are mismanaged as well (there is a huge new enclosure that was built for a hippo... which died within months when the public kept throwing buttons into its mouth). There is also very little signage, so no education going on.
There is enormous potential there... not only to create a world class tourist attraction (not only is it attached to the lovely gardens, it is also just down the road from the must-see national museum), but also to build up a rapport between the people and the local animals which is sadly lackly at the moment.
It could be used to teach school children about environmental management, and even safety lessons (for example around snakes or scorpians), it could be a source of pride to the local community. It could be involved in breeding programs. And, if it was run properly, with perhaps low to free entry, but plenty of food/souvenirs sold inside, it could also be a big money spinner.

For all those reasons, and simply to spare the suffering of the animals that are currently there, I would love to spend a lot of money doing up that place. I could help set up zoo keeper training programs and exchanges, rehaul the enclosures, set up eductional signage... it would be a beautiful thing once I had finished with it. Apparently they are doing a little bit to do it up now, but there is just not enough money (and probably not enough expert advise either).

Ah well, even if I don't win the lottery, I'm still hoping to be in a place one day where I can create a charity that will deal with that place and similar places around the world. It's just such a waste of potential...

I would splurge on a free weekend retreat for 100 people to attend, on a first sign up basis, in PEI Canada. The retreat would be a Consciousness retreat, hosted by the Island Druid with special guest speakers and training sessions in Yoga, Qi Gong, Meditation, Meditation, Meditation, consciousness and techniques for developing consciousness. Vegetarian (loose vegetarian) meals, pure water, pure Ocean air. Discussions, and break out groups. and more.

Learn about Consciousness Druidry, Mother Earth, herbalism for self use, true power of rituals, and so much more.

If anyone is interested, I may be hosting such a retreat end of Summer 2010, still in planning and discussion stages.

But if I won the lottery, not an issue and I would do it Free for 100 people to attend.

All the best - I.D.

I would not spend any of it right away. I would invest almost all of it so that my kids and their kids and their kids could have a supplemental source of income forever. I would set it up some way so they could not touch the principal. I would live off the interest and once I gave each of my kids some money to help get them out of debt, then I would help others with it. I would not make my kids dependent on my money, that's for sure. I'm not very materialistic and there isn't really anything I need. I would just be glad to have the peace of mind that it would bring just knowing I would be okay financially, no matter what.

One thing I would have to do, however, is pay off my student loans. Then I would like to buy an inexpensive older motor home (a small one) so I could take my animals and go visit all my children and friends whenever I wanted to. I would pay off my little piece of land so I wouldn't have any debts. All that I bought would have to be off of earned interest after that.

I think the key is not to go crazy with it and to put it in safe investments that will continuously generate income for many, many generations to come. A financial advisor would be a good step to take. So many winners end up broke after they win within a few years. That's because they go nuts having money and really don't consider the future.

Ah, to dream the impossible dream!!

With bunch of money in my pocket (I will need big trousers..LOL), the first thing I need to do is pay off all my debts. That shouldn't take too much effort, as I'm quite lucky to not have loan sharks after me. More like a loan cod, or some loan prawns. My parents debts will be shot dead too, then buried or thrown in a river. Parents would receive a quiet little house somewhere, far away from everything that annoys them. So, on the moon somewhere.

Then, of course, it's the predictable stuff. I'll start with a nice house, but not a mansion, as I can't keep more than two rooms tidy at any one time. I don't drive as I hate the idea of it, but hiring a chauffeur? That sounds like something a Lottery win can make happen. I will name him 'Jeeves'. Do chauffeurs come with names already? What do you feed them?

Where to, sir? The Arcade, Jeeves! Obviously my new big-but-not-too-big house would require a games room, so I would go on a quest to uncover working versions of all of my favorite classic arcade games. Boys and their toys, eh? Video games are a massive part of my life, so of course I'm going to need a personal arcade. This will probably be my only massive indulgence, as I'm not into boats and cars and statues and things. So, I'll be welcoming into my house the Simpson Arcade Game, Discs of Tron,Total War, Mario Kart Arcade, and I guess I'll be buying a few friends to play them with me.

The first thing I would do - Pay off my debt.
I'd then put some of it in to a savings account
I'd give a bunch of it to my family
and maybe take a vacation
I'd also purchase a house for everyone so we didn't have to worry about having a roof over our heads ever again!

First splurge (after taking care of responsibilities of course) would be a long cruise to Europe, including the Mediterranean ports of South Europe and the Greek Islands. To get to the ship we'd of course need a fancy new car. The cruise would include many formal dinners and balls, so a complete wardrobe for two would be part of the deal. With all the above, I'm sure we'd put a small dent in even a large lottery win ;).

Having said all that, I must share a joke, which I hope will not offend anyone...

This righteous and ultra religious man throughout his entire life always does everything he can to care for others. He always keeps his family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, etc. in his prayers. For himself he only asks one thing - to win the largest lottery jackpot. This goes on for many years, day in and day out. One day, Gabriel asks G-d: this man is so devout, and such a good person... can't you do something so he can get his one wish? G-d responds irately - I would, if he would only buy a ticket!

The moral - G-d helps those who help themselves, whether in the lottery or life in general.

Australia. And that would mean getting us both all new wardrobes for the occasion. my husband collects guns so i would buy him any gun he wanted.

I would purchase a house, big enough to have family & Lot's of friends over, I would share this house on holidays with those who do not have family to spend it with, prepare lots of meals for anyone who enjoys home cooking, create a beautiful garden for my friends & neighbors to just come & enjoy, to relax, to get away, to think about & work out their problems & just be alone with GOD, to help replenish themselves spiritually, mentally & physically, I would have lots of wind chimes & nice meditative music playing, also I would have some nice inspirational reading material available for my visitors to read while they are there. I would also have lots of healing & scented herbs growing in the garden for my visitors to cut & take home with them....
I would give back & share what I have been blessed with...

I would spend the entire amount I won buying or building a center in my city where the homeless could shower, bathe, clean up, and get basic medical and basic dental care.

A shower and place to clean up is the difference between a good day and the regular crappy day most of the homeless experience every day. I could help out here immensely with this prototype basic medical/dental/personal cleanliness service center.

The first step to getting out of a homeless scenario is to be able to get back the dignity lost while undergoing the process of becoming homeless. A place where a homeless person could take a shower and shave and use the bathroom would be the best place to start giving back the dignity they will need to recover from their loss and re-enter productive society. The medical and dental will help out with the health and dental issues that every homeless person develops as an eventual result of being homeless.

I would hire student nurses/actual medical professionals to help with the triage and the administration of all health care and prescription drugs and hire dental students/professionals to administer the basics to beginning the road back to reasonable dental health.

I would want to personally be a larger force on the front lines of homelessness and I and the family I do have are fortunate enough to not need the millions I would like to win in the lottery. By winning this I would ideally create a successful model for basic care and well being service centers for the homeless that could be repeated in other communities if the funding were there to repeat and/or build upon the ideas first presented with this prototype.

First of all, I'd treat my family to checkups at the doctor/dentist/and vision. I'd probably also hire a nutritionalist and a trainer to help me get this weight off... I have one child and we have been trying to have another, but I have hormone issues due to my weight, so it would be nice to get that under control so I will be able to have another baby :-(

After that, I've always wanted to build a house of my own, because from birth until now, all we have ever done is rent... It would be lovely to have the house of my dreams! And it would be completely solar-powered and as self-sufficient as can be, meaning I'd have chickens, cows, goats, and other farm animals, and a huge garden...

Then my husband and I would take our honeymoon that we never got to have, since we had a small wedding at a courthouse.

In our town, it seems like we have a lot of businesses, but not enough for the young people, so upon returning, I would open up a skating rink in my town to give the kids something to do, and open up a real movie theater, not the one we have that breaks down all the time in the middle of the show (and to give me something fun to be involved with during the night hours). I also promised my best friend that if I ever won a lot of money, I would help her build her own photography studio and we would become partners (so I have something to do during the day hours).

I would also get my daughter involved back in the things she used to do before my husband became unemployed... She was in gymnastics and ballet, and she hasn't been able to go back for about a year because we've not had the money...

I would buy a hobby farm where I could take in many retired racing greyhounds to stay at while they were waiting for their forever homes.

Greyhounds are very dear to my heart, and there are so many of them that need homes. It is unfortunate when they sit in a kennel while waiting for someone to adopt them. They are such wonderful, calm, polite dogs, they deserve a home after their racing careers are over.

I especially have a soft heart for the shy ones; the ones that spend the most time waiting for a forever home because they are too shy to come out and greet potential adopters.

I would take in as many of them as I could manage, and work on finding good homes for each and every one of them. That would make me happiest.

After debts and family, I would fund my life long philanthropic dream.

Buy and furnish houses in separate moderately priced areas of a medium to large size city in good school districts.

Work with local social service agencies or churches to identify homeless or near homeless families.

For 12 months they would have use of a house, a weeks worth of clothing each, daycare (for however many hours needed per day) for children under 12 (so before/after school care for older ones), unlimited tutors for school age children as desired/needed, and a food allowance (which diminishes over time as their earning power increases) with the following requirements:

=No substance use/abuse by anyone,
=No physical or psychological abuse by anyone,
=Everyone attends family counseling weekly,
-----(They're going through a life changing experience - issues will arise),
=Everyone attends 2 - week long intensive courses on taking care of and maintaining a home,
-----(From organization and housecleaning tips, to home repairs),
-----(Appropriate skills/chores taught for each age level),
-----(1st week is when they enter the program, 2nd week is 3 months into the program),
=Everyone attends intensive (middle class) etiquette training for the first 4 weeks,
-----(As much about actions/reactions people expect as about table manners and thank yous),
=Adults attend money management and job skills training for 3 months,
=At least one adult must be working full-time by month 5 regardless of economic conditions,
=Children/Teens take music, art, any culturally related lessons for the year,
=If the children are doing well in school, the family has money in a savings account, and they can demonstrate that they can afford to pay for all the running of the house including modest rent at the end of the year, they can stay there for another year with no more requirements other than paying utilities, rent and properly caring for the home/yard. If after that year, they still wish to remain in the home, they would have to pay normal market rate for rent.

All proceeds would go back into whatever the non-profit organization was that I set up to do this so that over time more houses could be acquired to help more families break free of poverty born of ignorance.

I would pay off my student loans (which are small, honestly, but need to be taken care of), and then I would put a good half (or more) into a high-interest savings account, buy a small one-bedroom house somewhere nice (not sure where), and use the interest and remaining money to pay the bills and contribute to a retirement fund (mutual funds, maybe an IRA). The occasional vacations would be had, just so I don't go crazy, but I wouldn't splurge really. I'm very content living a small life. :)

I'd buy some acreage in Santa Cruz, CA. and build each of my family members a home on it so that we could be closer to eachother. Then I would start an American Saddlebred horse ranch and surround us with beauty. My idea of heaven is having my family near me and the heartwarming smell of horse poop, fresh hay, and coffee in the mornin'.

I would hire a personal assistant. This has always been a dream of mine. I feel it would give me so much for free for my son, time to work and/or do the things that I want to do. Also, I don't like confrontation with other people much, so this would relieve a big burden of mine. I would be good to my personal assistant too, so they would want to continue the job :)!

I don't spend much on the lotto. There are two main drawings a week I participate in, and I usually spend only $2 per evening. That modest purchase means I'd like to win it but don't expect to, so I don't waste much on it. I have a running mental list of things to do if I were to win it, and my "splurge" would be to fulfill the items on that list.

Top of that list are a few friends who have specific needs that I'd like to help them with. One friend in New York City has struggled to bring his business back to the level it was at before the World Trade Center buildings collapsed in 2001. He has incurred some debt in getting himself back on his feet that I would like to clear so he can move forward from here, living on what he makes and not always hounded by that debt.

In a similar fashion, I have a friend in this area who has been struggling to get past debt incurred when his partner was ill and lost his insurance. I'd like to see him be able to move forward living on the wages he earns, and not always be pulled down by medical bills. His partner died, making this all the more difficult.

There are several people I would send to college, though for a couple of them it might have to be in the form of an anonymous donor. One friend has struggled for years to take a class a semester, and has only managed to complete an AA so far. She is bright and talented and I'd like to see her be able to complete her school work sooner than this one-at-a-time plan allows.

Finally, there is a dinner party I would like to hold and I would be bringing in friends from various places where I have lived who I think would enjoy meeting each other. This dinner would probably be the culmination of a couple of days of visiting and doing things that they like doing but can't otherwise afford. Not necessarily fancy, but something that is normally out of reach.

Ahhhh, I wish! My husband and I probably spend too much time on this question, sitting up at night day dreaming!

Personally, the first thing I would do is pay my house off, so I no longer had a mortgage payment!

And when it comes to me, personally I would finally buy myself a new wardrobe. As a Mom I put the kids and house above everything else, and tend to never get to myself on my list! (Lol, sad but true)So I pretty much wear garage sale finds, only. I would take a thousand dollars and buy myself new clothes!

Great question! Thanks for asking!

if that scenario happens. The next thing i will do with the money after paying off debt and taking care of family are, First and foremost i will gonna donate 1/2 of it into a charity to help people in needs and most epecially for those who suffered from calamities in different country. And then 1/4 of it will be invested in a business which can help me to earn money and support my family wants and needs. the 1/4 goes to the the public schools street childrens and who cannot afford to go to school to help them to be educated individuals in the future.
In that case no people will be experiencing starvation, poorness, uneducated.

I would want to start my own business. Property renovations and property rentals probably. I have a number of friends with relevant skills and experience who lack the funds to do this for a living, I would basically provide the funding for them. They would be working for me though and I would be overseeing everything that happens.

If I am going to win in a lottery, I am going to bring my family to a long vacation they deserve. I will also bring my mother who lives with us because she loves to travel and visit other places. We will visit Palawan, Boracay and Dahilayan Park zip line.
My daughters will love it and it will be long, lazy, and carefree vacation full of fun. Beach, zip lines, exploring the caves, and many more on the places I have mentioned.

I would splurge on a Laptop after I help family and friends if I win a lottery. Laptop computer will be very helpful for me especially because I am always busy like everyone who has a family. Laptop can be everywhere, in the kitchen, on the road, on the farm(which we often go to on weekends) or on outings , just anywhere where there is some vacant time between the chores or necessary socializing. I don't have to run to my desktop inside my room or wait to go back home to do my computer works especially I can login to Mahalo anytime I want which I can't get enough. Anyway, I don't think I can win a lottery because I don't participate on this for a very very long time already. I guess I will just wait to buy a laptop for myself hopefully.

The first thing I would splurge on is secure investments. I will have to put some away before I could do anything else. Paying myself first is so important to me.

Hmmmm....I'm assuming we mean the big jackpot sort of lottery, right? Ok. The debts are paid off and the family is taken care of, all the way through the end of college. One of the debts is the mortgage, so need to take care of that, of course. Whatever was left, I would need to calculate how much was going to get yanked for income tax, then look at the remainder.

I'm not much into "stuff." I might quit my lucrative job and just have fun on Mahalo. I'd like to have a remote piece of gear that would pick up the Internet any time, anywhere.

I'm really thinking here. Well, I think a lot of remodeling would be very cool. Don't want to move.

Then I think I'd plan some really cool SCUBA dives and a trip to Greece.

I would definitely build my dream home. Which would be in the middle of nowhere. A beautiful nowhere, mind you. Like on the top/side of a beautiful mountain. Only accessible by off-road vehicle or helicopter. it would be "off the grid" and i'd be able to live self-sustained, when i felt like it. A kind of retreat, and i'd take people there for retreats. And who knows, may be a shelter during WWIII or some scary zombie epidemic.

you can never be too cautious around zombies.

Since you specified using the term "Splurge" then investing it and negotiating with banks the best eturn for my new found money would be out of the question:) In this case I would go for a well planned trip around the globe to visit all of my family that are all over the place. It would be nice to see them all again. On the way, I would buy a specific item unique to that place and take it home, in my new "hacienda", lol

My home, Good computer, and good computer toys.. The splurge part that is.. Lots of land, and lots of pets.. and hire lots of people to help me with them and let them live with me for free if they could stand me lol .. :) oh a copy of every religious and spiritual scripture ever written, and song and chant ever made.. well if I was a trillionare :) :P otherwise,, my real interest is securing myself a home with my little family of cats, and the marsh and woods the rest would be invested in a way to keep a stream of money flowing to keep helping others and flood a pond somewhere when I pass.. to allow someone else to do the same. :) .

Although this largely depends on the amount of money won in the lottery, but let us suppose that is enough to take care of every need of my family (including luxurious ones like cars, bikes, air conditioners etc. etc.) and to pay off my debt (which is really huge) and still leaves an unimaginably huge amount in my hand. In that case, I would do the following with the leftover money;

1. Invest 25% of the amount in purchasing property (real estate) and 25% of it in pension/monthly income/return policy or scheme, so that I don't have to worry for the future.

2. With the rest (let us suppose that it is still a very big amount), I would go for a detailed world tour, i.e. visit almost every corner of the world, enjoy all dishes & cuisines, enjoy all luxuries and see the strangest and the greatest natural and man made marvels. We are blessed with only a single life, and that too not long enough to see and experience the immeasurable beauty of Earth. So, I would not waste a moment and take a tour, so that when I die, I don't repent that I haven't seen enough.

3. If still something is left, then I would buy a whole lot of lottery tickets again. If I again win this time, I would think of going on a trip to moon. If that is not possible, then perhaps another world tour and keeping the rest for my children.

4. When all the above three goals are achieved and still something is left, then I would donate the leftover in charity (This may sound a bit selfish and rude, but that's fact. One should take care of himself & his family first and then think of charity).

May God make this true. Amen!

Thanks
