If you were given the oppurtunity to be one of the first permanent colonists on Mars would you go?

Knowing the hardships and challenges that the early colonists would face and that you would never return to Earth would you become a Martian?
What would you choose as your primary mission work once you reached Mars?
Why would you choose to go?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would love to go to Mars. It would be terrifying - the worst way to die, in my opinion, is asphyxiation, and space has a lot of potential to do just that ("Apollo 13" scared me to death) - but it would be amazing to live on another planet. However, I would miss a lot about Earth. I would miss all my friends and family, I would miss the food, I'm sure, I would miss the TV and internet (if that wasn't possible to beam that over to Mars), I would miss the variety of the Earthly landscape, and the linguistic diversity of a world filled with people. But if I could find my niche in society, maybe as an English teacher, I'd dare to live out perhaps the remaining years as the first of the Martians. I don't think I'd go there now, when I have all my life ahead of me to experience Earth. I'd definitely love to be part of a team that helped terraform the planet.

I would not go, not because it is not attractive to me, or because of the challenges involved, but because my work here on Earth is not done.

Alas... for I would also love to boldly go where no one has gone before. :)

Against going...

- Alas I am no longer in my physical prime, and scrambling around canyons and mountains may be asking too much of my knees. :)

- I would of course miss my family and friends back on Earth

- I think I have responsibilities and commitments on Earth that I must take seriously, and not go off wandering the universe, much as I would like to.

For going...

- I'd love the exploration, the adventure, the challenge and being on the cutting edge

> What would you choose as your primary mission work once you reached Mars?

Given my age and skillset... most likely Mission Commander, with maybe a sideline studying Solar System Evolution. My scientific skills are pretty rusty for me to really be a mission specialist.

I guess it would all depend on whether there was internet. Would it still be called the "internet?" Maybe it would be changed to "solarsystemnet" or "galactanet." Because you can't play Xbox Live without the internet, duh.
