If you try to get a blog running and have about 1k visitors a month and growing, is it profitable to host it yourself at a unique domain?

I know it's not all about the money, but it is important as I just graduated this year and am trying to survive on my own in the real world. This is not my only venture. I more just want to see it reach maximum profitability while working on it 6-10 hours a week (as it stands now).

Thanks

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are a lot of variables involved in figuring out how much traffic you need to be profitable.

What is the websites niche? If you are talking about high value keywords you make more from the same amount of traffic than if you are talking about low value keywords. How much competition is there in the niche? If there are a ton of sites there is a lot of advertising inventory and the prices will be low.

How are you doing to monetize? Are you building a list and marketing to the list or are you relying on google ads? The big advantage of building a list is you get multiple shots to sell them something. Google ads can work for some people but the other issue is google can cut you off at any time.

How are you calculating profitable? If you are just counting the hard costs (hosting can be had for $5-10/mo) then absolutely you should be profitable. If you are counting your time, what's your time worth? If your time is worth $20/hr then you need to make $500-$800/mo to pay for your time.

I appreciate this answer. Unfortunately I can't go into detail at this time. I also like your take on personal time. I realize at this point that this question is way too forwardly thinking. You do have the best answer in any case.

As inexpensive as domain names are these days, it wouldn't hurt to at least have the domain name in your pocket. There are so many squatters out there. Would suck to find the name unavailable if you ever changed your mind.
Don't forget to register your personal name domain too. Even if it's only as a way for people to search for your email address. Mine is just a QR code with my contacts... www.daviddurall.com

Google makes it mad easy to check and send email from your own domain.

Just do it.

Congrats on your 1k+ hits.

Your answer is much appreciated. I think I will take this step soon. I like your QR code idea too.
