If you pay into social security, are you owed that money in retirement? Is it a debt to you that the government should be forced to repay?
There seems to be a lot of serious debate to be had on the topic. Are things like social security payments and taxes just costs of living that you write off, or are you entitled to services and cash at a later date in return? Is the government really indebted to you when you contribute to social security?

No it is a program that they can end at any time. Remember Social Security doesn't only cover retirement. The Act covers disability, children whose Parent have died, emergency payments to families and unemployment. The real problem is they are taking the money out for all sorts of other programs that are unrelated to SS. But if the Gov. ends a program you are out of luck. This is not an account held for you with a balance like a pension it is a tax payment. The Gov. has the final say in any entitlement program. And if they end SS I would bet that they just rename the tax and make you keep paying it.
