If you move away from Australia, what happens to your HECS debt?

If you return does it have to be repaid? I have heard that if you live overseas for over seven years it is written off. Is this true?
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I believe the terms specify that if you're earning over the threshold amount in Australia, they will take compulsory repayments out of your pay.

On the Tax File Number declaration form that you give to a new employer, it asks you if you have a HECS or HELP debt.

You could, in theory, lie on this. But I think they'd probably red flag the discrepancy in some computer somewhere and come after you.

You'll still owe it, but won't encounter any attempts to collect. If you return and register your address, etc., you're back in the loop and they'll come after you again. Good luck. I'd just leave and never come back.

If you leave the country there is little chance any action will be taken to find you and have you repay the debt. The man hours it would take to hunt you down and get legal action to have the funds paid back would most likely not be worth it.
