If you had your child at a park & saw a pitbull there on a leash with its owner, would you let your child play freely?

I would be cautious about letting my child play with ANY strange dog, not just a pit bull. Even teeny dogs can be dangerous; a young couple I know got a tiny designer dog puppy and gave it away when it bit their baby, but it should never have been allowed near the baby anyway until it had been properly socialized and trained.

A friend has a pit bull and she is one of the sweetest, gentlest dogs I know. When she's playing, she sounds like she could tear your arm off, but she never bites or becomes overly aggressive. When they are well-raised, pit bulls are great dogs! I also know some Rottie owners, and their dogs are not aggressive, either.

Certain breeds have dangerous reps, but the "bad" ones have been raised by owners who don't understand how to handle dogs with dominant personalities, or who have turned them mean on purpose.

In my opinion, any guy who thinks he needs to have a mean dog is trying to compensate for his own masculine insecurity...

The dog on a leash with its owner is a sign that the owner trusts the dog not to hurt someone and the leash is most likely law. It is where I'm from anyway. I would let my child play freely but only because I know that my child knows better than to go near strange dogs, big or small. Small dogs have given us more problems than big ones. A pit bull is not always mean and as long as the owner has the dog on a leash and under control I see no problem with letting my child play.
