If you had to pick players to make up an all time NHL team, which 25 players would you choose? Who would make up each of the lines? Who

would start at goaltender and who would coach this team and who would be the bench coaches? Which arena would this team play in? Is there any team in history that could compete regularly with this assembled team? You can pick any player from any era, even if you never saw the player play. Just support your answer with statistics or revelent facts. Thank you for your interest and time answering this question.

I will use a wide range of criteria to answer your question (which I found interesting yet difficult). In goal, I would want to choose three players who I can rely on game in and game out. They play well positionally yet can also defend himself without relying on others. In defence, I would need players both offensively minded and also reliable on the blueline. I would also want enforcers in case they are needed. Forwards I would need: scoring prowess, grit and power, experience, and defensive capabilties. Note that a player does not need to have all of these traits, just one or maybe two.

* Goal
Patrick Roy - his performance in 1993 is the stuff of legends, and his career stats speak for themselves
Martin Brodeur - he broke the long-standing shutout record of Terry Sawchuk and has been a consistent performer on the New Jersey Devils team his entire career
Jacques Plante - he invented the goalie mask, and revolutionized the game for the goaltender

* Defence
Bobby Orr - he revolutionized the role of the defenceman, and paved the way for many "offensive defencemen" after him
Larry Robinson - "The Big Bird" was an intimdating presence on the Habs blueline
Paul Coffey - the modern-day Bobby Orr
Chris Chelios - his leadership and stamina is unheard of in the modern age, B as it looks like he might still be playing into his 50's
Niklas Lidstrom - six Norris trophies
Ray Bourque - it took him 23 years to win a Stanley Cup but he never gave up
Scott Stevens - one of the most feared (and some say dirty) players, but he gave it his all
Al MacInnis - a force on the powerplay with his intimidating slap shot
Doug Harvey - one of the first offensive defencemen in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens
Denis Potvin - led the New York Islanders dynasty along with Billy Smith

* Forwards
Maurice Richard - those fiery eyes
Mario Lemieux - some of his moves were impossible
Wayne Gretzky - words not necessary
Guy Lafleur - he could skate like he was on air
Mike Bossy - if his career wasn't cut short by injury, who knows how many goals he could have scored
Bob Gainey - the best defensive forward there ever was
Jean Beliveau - a true leader
Marcel Dionne - if only he'd played for the Montreal Canadiens
Phil Esposito - he could score, he could hit
Mark Messier - I may not like the guy, but he was a great leader and motivator
Jari Kurri - arguably the best player ever to come from Europe
Sidney Crosby - if only he wouldn't whine so much

* Coach
Scotty Bowman
