If you had to defend yourself, would you feel more comfortable with or without a gun?

I am of the belief that serial killers, mass murderers, and a host of other violent criminals should have been killed in the commission of their first crime. If they are dealt with properly the first time you will have saved numerous other families and communities needless heartbreaks.
Every adult should be carrying a gun, and they also need to be properly trained in it's use. Everyone has to remember that for every right we possess we also possess several layers of responsibility.

M$We do however have many guns in our country for farming and hunting - mainly rifles and shotguns. I used to own a shotgun. I used to hunt my food when I traveled around the country many years ago. I got quite good at it. I was taught how to shoot by a policeman, at the range.
He also told me how to defend myself. He didn't teach me to use a gun for that. I learnt other methods of defending myself ( martial arts and how-to-run-fast-even-in-high-heels-and-a-dress ).
I would never use a gun against anyone! I would rather run away. I would rather I got hurt. It's funny how different countries view violence of this sort. I'm sure so many here have a gun in the bedroom, a gun in the car, a gun in the garage etc etc etc etc. What's the damn point when you know everyone has one.
I would defend myself but not with a gun.
I'm not that stupid because they are probably a better shot than me and could probably beat me anyway. I'd probably get shot with my own gun. Grief. It happens all the time!
Guns are F____KED
and no, I couldn't care less if you agree or not :)

M$Removing myself from the situation is the best option I agree.
It IS interesting to learn about guns in other countries. You may be surprized to find that a very large number of gun owners in America have experieinces with guns very similar to yours. They have rifles and shotguns for hunting or varmits/predators on farms and ranches, or they use them strictly for target shooting. In five generations of gun use, no one in my family has ever had to even make the choice of whether to use a gun to protect themselves. In fact, my father taught me it was wrong to take a life. I still believe it's wrong, but it's one of those wrong things that I would do anyway, if I couldn't run away (seriously) or dazzle my attacker with my karate skills (kidding).
Are you certain that people get shot wiht their own guns all the time? If so perhaps that is different than in America. I've actually never heard of a case of that happening. Not that it would change either of our opininons, but it's okay for us to differ, isn't it? It's certainly alright with me.

M$Where do you live that you're in that much danger? I think I'd spend my money on moving to a better location than on guns. I've never even touched a gun in my nearly 50 years on this earth. Never needed to, never wanted to.
I took the queston as hypothetical, since it says "if" I had to defend myself from someone who was threatening my life. I am happy to say that while guns have been in my family for five generations, no one has so much as pointed one at another person. Among my most precious possessions are the two rifles my father rebuilt for me in his old age. He took up gunsmithing when his health was failing too much to shoot. I taught my wife and son to shoot, the boy for fun and the wife because she felt more comfortable being home alone while I was in night school. In a safer than average neighborhood one night, a group of men came knocking loudling on our door and yelling to open up. Peggy quietly got out her shot gun and loaded it, and sat in a chair facing the door, far enough back to be out of reach should they break in, but close enough that she would be the first thing they saw if they broke in (and maybe the last). After a bit, the men went away, perhaps figuring out they were at the wrong door. In any case, how surprized they would have been to break in and come face to face with a deadly calm woman holding a loaded shotgun on them. You can't always run and hide, in my opinion it's better to be prepared to shoot than to be raped and murdered, but that's just my opinion. I hope that I have not caused you any undue alarm. My neighborhood is quite safe.
Perhaps geography does have something to do with it, but I tend to agree with you @keepontryin. I live in Oklahoma, and while I often disagree with the majority around here in terms of politics and social reform, gun control is one area where my views are consistently the same. There are a lot of gun owners around here, and I think it is a big deterrent of crime. I also own several firearms and have a non-resident conceal and carry permit that allows me to carry certain firearms when travelling to other states. It is natural for people that have never handled guns to be afraid of them. But for the people who know how to use them (responsibly), gun ownership offers greater peace of mind. I hope that I never have to use mine either--to defend myself or anyone else, but I also hope that anyone who might even think about breaking into my home or doing anything detrimental to me or any member of my family is completely aware of what is waiting for them on the other side of that door. Gun ownership is the deterrent....not necessarily having to use the gun, but having it and letting people know that you have it.
My father and brother and uncles all hunted and shot guns in target practice. They felt it important that my sister and I learned all about guns, so we would not have any accidents. We were taught how to handle and
shoot them...how not to point them in any dangerous direction. We learned that the bullet hits the target instantly and is very dangerous.
I say all this, because if my friend's son had been taught this information, he would still be alive. He said, sadly, that he never showed his son. He was teaching him to be a camera man in his own foot steps. Too many stories about kids getting a hold of a gun and finding one of them instantly killed. Education and target practice at a shooting range should always be implemented in a child's daily education, also, discussions at the dinner table can save a lot of mistakes and heart ache.

I agree with most of your answer, everything except "Every adult should be carrying a gun"
Not every adult should carry a gun in my opinion.
If a law abiding, sane individual does not wish to execise their right to bear arms, for whatever their reason...guns scare them...its against their personal belief...or they just don't want to, regardless of their reason, they shouldn't carry one.
To NOT carry a gun is as much a right as it should be TO carry one.
