If you had a choice to continue mowing the lawn or replace with gravel which requires no petrol for the mower and no watering, would you?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I choose to continue mowing. The grass is good for erosion prevention, the creation of oxygen, and the environment. . . etc. BTW I use a push mower that does not require gasoline. I push it and the little blade spins and cuts the grass. No fuel required.

I like having a lawn, so no gravel for me.

I live in the desert and they call little gravel landscaping desert landscaping. It is not possible to have a green lush lawn without using a lot of water, so to conserve water I reluctantly choose a desert landscape.

The birds drop seeds here so I get a little greenery on occasion. ( mainly in the cracks of my sidewalk)

Why bother replacing with gravel? Just rake up the lawn, and then let the yard go native. Our yard is native. Oh, but we live in the desert. Since you said petrol, I gather you live in the UK where it rains so much that your garden will be choked with plants in a week even if you do rake them all up? Yeah, in that situation I would go with gravel.

Ah, well, I am going out on a limb and guessing that there is an environmental subtext to this question. Talking about conserving gas/petrol and water, but you loose a lot, too...

Up front, I would keep Grass, but I decided a comparison is also in order.

Go Gravel (Not Necessarily Go Green)
+ Conserve Gas/Petrol
+ Conserve Water (dependent on annual rainfall)
~ Maintenance changes to regular raking. (You cannot let a volume of plant matter rot on top of the gravel - neighbors grass clippings, fall leaves, animal waste.)
- Less comfortable under foot. (Speculation.)
- Children more likely to scrape themselves on it. (Speculation, even smooth pea stone can be rough if you wipe out in it.)
- Will need filler gravel from time to time, just like driveways.
- Yard quality gravel might be expensive and have a polluted manufacturing/cleaning history. (Speculation.)

Keep The Grass
+ Maintain the current ecosystem in your yard.
+ Holds soil in place efficiently.
~ Keep your current yard work.
- Grass stains.
- Hides insects that might bite/sting
- Needs more maintenance in dry weather. (Needs watered when you are trying to conserve water.)
- May need to get expensive seed to liven up dead spots.
