If you don't clean the lint trap in a drier, will it start a fire?

Does this really happen or does the drier just perform poorly? I want to know if there are any documented cases or if my mom is just pulling my leg.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This is not only possible, it has happened and resulted in death. A mother in Kentucky died from a clothes dryer lint fire in September 2008.

The build-up increases the risk of a fire. But even though the chances are low, you should clean your lint trap because otherwise it takes more time (and energy) to dry your clothes.
