If you could have one banned item in prison, what would it be?

This question comes from the story of George Vera, an obese Texas man who hid a 9mm pistol in his rolls of fat at the county jail.

Regardless of Body Mass Index (BMI), what would be one thing you would want in prison that generally is not allowed and why? For an extra bonus, iPhones are not an option. :)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Weapons are limited by my ability to use them. Firearms run out of ammunition and a person has to really know what they're doing to use a knife well enough to reliably defend oneself. Besides, knife substitutes and drugs are sufficiently available in prison - no need waste my "one wish" there.

iPhone would have been my first choice, but apparently I can have anything but that. Since the question is what one thing would I want to have, I'm assuming I don't have to hide it and have free use, so I'm saying a laptop for my very own use in my cell. That gives me the communication functions of the phone, music, movies, the software I need to make my time productive, and even probably a limited-use camera. Yep, a laptop it is!

I don't know if it's banned, but I would insist on it!

(and, listen, don't get in my face that the picture wouldn't work for me.)

I'd choose a home brewing kit, people will pay top dollar for real drinks according to NatGeo's "Locked Up" so by being able to create high quality home brew and then sell it for a sweet profit.

Ok Just one item that is banned, it's not a laptop, not a phone, not even a pet, this is a no brainer. The KEY to the locks that hold me in. Thats what I would want.

Good instant coffee, as much as I could get smuggled in.
Like the Starbucks VIA Ready Brew Instant Coffee
This would bring a measure of comfort as I enjoy coffee daily here at home.
Instant coffee would also allow me to have a desired commodity to trade with the other inmates.

I would have to say a monthly visit for a spouse to spend the night. California right now is the only prison that offers this. I am thinking that this might reduce the rape and other criminal acts from the prisoners.

A rock hammer and a degree in accounting

:)

In all seriousness, a camera.
I'd create a black-and-white photo journal of my time in the clinc. I'd try to capture "hopefulness" in the series.

OR

A large USB flash drive. Looks like some prisons have computers and if there was even a chance that I could use the time in prison to write code, I would. I'd need the flash drive to save my work. If violence and time allotments didn't get in the way, a couple of years with nothing to do but think and write code could turn out very well.

My dog, Cookie. She would make me happy and provide some much-needed companionship. She would also be easy to hide, assuming I could somehow control her bark. :)

Nice choice! I think I would have to pick my dogs as well, though being 55 and 90 pounds each, I might have a tougher time concealing them than your little Cookie! :)

I was about to say my iPhone, then I reread the question. I would be in rough shape without my iPhone. Can I have an iPod Touch? If that is against the rules, I may have to switch to the dark side and look into a Zune HD.

Chastity belts & laptops aside, I think protection is numero uno... so a switchblade for shanking would be my item of choice.

ok so no phones ?

I would take my laptop ( with Skype ha ha ) that way I can call my family, keep the " shower issues " under control since I can bribe them by letting them use my laptop and still go onto Mahalo to make some money to then hire some Guys who can set up some other chick so it looks like she did the crime and not me ( probably would be in Jail for murder ) - that way I get out of prison and back to my iPhone ... oh and my family lol !!

that's really mean...

why would you frame someone for your crime? that's just cruel.

mimisworld's Avatar
mimisworld | 2 years, 9 months ago Report

ha ha it is not cruel - if I would be in Jail my morality would be cruel anyways - chances are that if I am in Jail for murder or some other crime are pretty much high so why would I really care about being cruel if I can get the hell out of Jail ?

Knowing I would never even get close to one !

Im actually really nice lol

What no phones?! I could update my tweets on my BlackBerry. I would get thousands of followers, who wouldn't want to read tweets about someone in prison. tweet #21 "My first shower in prison, I think everything will be fine" tweet #22 "Okay, some guy just came in, he seems nice....OMG!..... what the hell!"

Ugh, I don't want to think about it! Perhaps I'll take my portable HD TV. I can't miss any episodes of the 'Shark Tank', which by the way airs tomorrow! I can't wait!
