If you could have a free volunteer trip - would you use it to learn about a future career OR enjoy travel you could never afford?

OR would you do both? OR neither? then why a free trip?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I always make it a point to combine buisness with pleasure. Consider this, my father is a fishing guide and may take a trip that allows him to go on vacation and teach people flyfishing at the same time. A voulenteer trip implies that much of the time spent in the new location will be spent in specific tasks.

I would attempt to find a task that helps develop job skills as well as something I enjoy. Ex. If I was a plumber I would try to find a job working on a water delivery system for an area.

As an aside . . .

I did not vote uninteresting. It is likely I will in the future if the question contains seemingly unrelated links, or a series of marginally related links.

It just seems a bit "spammy" You will note I did not include the first link as it relates perfectly to the question, but the others really feel tacked on to me.

. . .
These relate loosly to the question. . .

I'd go with the career search. A complete "get away" trip would be nice, but, the way I see it is this: Maybe the career search would help you find out what you want to do in life, thus landing you a great job, in turn putting a nice paycheck in your pocket. Then, after those paychecks have been cashed, you can finally afford to take those trips you never could before!

Kind of a "teach a man" to fish sort of situation, I think :-)

Never say never. I would use it to enjoy travel to places I couldn't currently afford, or to places I might never have considered traveling at all. I would look at it as an opportunity to get acquainted with people from a different culture and a different part of the world, and I would hope that my volunteer activities would also leave a bit of free time to explore and learn more - though I would expect if the trip were free, I'd spend most of the time working.

Both. Knowledge is a wonderful thing. The more you have, the better off you are. I'm referencing the addage, "a little knowledge is dangerous."

I will enjoy the trip while using the opportunity to learn more. If I can make an interesting career from this experience, why not?
I will not be trying to make a career from this. But if I can see an opportunity, I am not going to hold me back either.
The key is when an opportunity is presented, just grab that.

Have you ever heard the phrase that nothing in life is for free? Well, it's true. An expenses paid trip like this is usually to help boost the knowledge of the individual pertaining to employment, awareness of other cultures, etc. However, this opportunity could be used in both these ways and so many others. In addition to the life lessons that you will learn, regardless if you want to or not, this can help bolster a future career and open your eyes to so many things. If this is something that you are passionate about or truly interested in, you can also a trip that you couldn't otherwise have been able to afford. My advice to anyone given an opportunity like this is to keep an open mind, enjoy themselves, and learn from such an experience.

Why couldn't I combine both? What if I joined a branch of the service and learned a career and was stationed somewhere cool?
