I just did this exercise with my grandmother. We went through a ton of different options. The one thing that really drove us to the Subaru was the fact that it has all wheel drive...and we, like your picture depicts, get snow where we are.
It does not get the best gas mileage (averaging about 21-23 MPG), but it has a great resale value (here anyways were the AWD is a benefit.)
My grandma has been very impressed with the car, and our dealer has been great too...

M$In reality, I am perfectly happy with my wife's 2008 Scion xB. Practical, good gas mileage, intriguing design and still turns heads every once in a while. my 2006 xA does a better job in the MPG dept but lacks in space and punch.
