If you could create your own winter holiday (like Festivus), what would it be like?

The idea of Festivus is brilliant (what with all the feats of strength and the airing of grievances) and got me to thinking about what kind of holiday I would create if I could make one up. The best answer should have an origin story of the holiday, a few symbols, some activities that are always performed, and a cool name!

January Afire. It would be family-friendly, fun and involve lots of light. It would involve a large bonfire in towns around the country, at 9PM or so. Marshmallows, cider and cocoa would be very much encouraged. As would its proximity to a sledding hill or skating rink. Basically, like a parade that finishes in a circle.

The Snow Shovel Migration. We'd all strap snow shovels to our bumpers and start driving south until someone asks "What is that?" Then we'd make camp.

My new holiday is RETURN-a-THON.

As Americans most of us have way to much stuff already. On RETURN-a-THON day we all take back 90% of the stuff we got that we really don't need, and instead of getting cash the stores send the money directly to the charity of your choice.

peace,
joe

Winter Peace festival: People can really take time to think seriously about how to promote peace. A day for meetings and volunteer recruitment that ends with public meals where everyone is welcome (everyone sitting side by side and talking). Maybe in January, when holiday volunteering is done, but the need remains.

Chrismeximus. You would wake up in the morning and there would be tacos and tortas under the tree and chile rellenos would be hung by the chimney with care.

Seems like Christmas is all too often a very stressful time. People worry about getting the right gifts, making the tree and lights and ornaments look just right, and preparing elaborate meals. It shouldn't need to be that way. It should be a break from the normal routine, certainly, but it should be a time to recharge and think about what really matters.

If I were to design a new winter holiday, then, I would place an emphasis on simplicity, family togetherness, and relaxation. Any decorations should take no more than a half hour to set up. No gifts would be expected. The evening would end with the family sitting around a fireplace or a board game or just a plain living room, drinking hot cocoa, talking, and enjoying each other's company. That's what's really important.

One cold December night, I went to the supermarket to get some eggnog. I reached for the glass bottle at the same time as some other man. After raining blows upon his head, the bottle slipped out and shattered on the floor. The eggnog was ruined, but out of it, the spirit of Indulgemas was born.

This holiday is for those who hate the commercial aspects of the holidays, but love the eating and chance to indulge. It is centered around food and drink, and all are merry. Like the airing of grievances, everyone goes around the table and tells when someone held them back from indulging, showing how many problems they have with each other. Naturally, Christmas foods, gingerbread cookies, and eggnog are strong symbols of the celebrations!

I remember festevis. That's funny. Haven't thought about that for a long time. Seinfeld was a great show.
