If you could buy one website, what site would you buy?

Lets say you have a huge amount of money to spend and you decide to buy a website.

What website would you buy and why would you buy that website?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think that the obvious answer would be google.com. Google is arguably the most valuable website on the Internet.

A close second would be Baidu. There are a larger number of Internet users in China and as a result, this Chinese SE is exceptionally powerful.

Beyond search engines, I would buy Rapidshare. Sure, it's popular because many pirates use it to transfer files via http... but as long as they play by the book, this is a solid web business with low staff and support (overhead) requirements that must turn a very nice profit.

Above all else, if I had a stack of money burning a whole in my pocket, I wouldn't buy 1 website. I'd buy a bunch of related ones. I would carefully research and pick a category that is growing and I think would be sustained for a number of years and then buy up as many as I could afford.

Ok, if getting a return isn't a consideration.... I'll have the New York Times - nytimes.com and the company that goes with it.

Because how cool would it be to be the owner of the New York Times?

Then I'd make sure I got to go to all the coolest happenings and meet the most interesting people.

Interesting choices.

In the real world the problem with buying Google etc is you'd have to pay top dollar and you might not get your money's worth, successful as it is.

Now Mahalo would be an interesting play. I think it might just become huge. Because how many sites do I know where people have got their wives and housemates into it as well?

Money wasn't a concern... so Google would still win over Mahalo :)

I'd need to have a few years of operating expenses on top of the purchase price in my pocket to make it real, but it would be very cool to be in Google's place.

I would buy Google also, because I could use it to develop a world wide literacy site. It would work like the old SRA reading materials. On the home page a person would see a horizontal bar with various colors. Clicking on a color would take you to reading materials. Each bar would be more difficult. At the end of the material, you would be graded. Fast learners could jump ahead. Eventually, I would develop this concept for every language.

I think that Google is much more influential than the NYT. Google's reach and income extends beyond content and search.

If my purchase offer works out .... you can be the VP of Google News and help build it to finally take out the NYT :)

I agree. eBay would be the one to buy. First, as you said, it needs a major overhaul, second they really have no competition.

I'd switch it to a flat rate auction model.

Thank god somebody will!!

It used to be so good. Then it was kinda good. now it's just "meh". granted I still find something occassionally worth buying, but I'll barely even sell something there anymore. it's usually just better (and easier) to use Craigslist for anything over $10.

Easy: etsy.com. I absolutely adore the site, its philosophy, and the DIY/handmade movement that it supports. And I think the new global economy that will follow this recession is likely to include a larger place for handmade products beyond their current luxury/specialty niche.

Well, buying a top website also means buy the company that owns. So it can be from any sector, not just an internet company.

If I can buy only one, I would buy GE.com. The company is by itself a mutual fund and it is in every growth sector. And they also have many ventures supporting Green planet.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7791657/

It's also one of the cheapest bluechip company right now. From google finance:

"General Electric Company (GE) is a diversified technology, media and financial services company. Its products and services include aircraft engines, power generation, water processing, security technology, medical imaging, business and consumer financing, media content and industrial products. As of December 31, 2008, GE operated in five segments: Energy Infrastructure, Technology Infrastructure, NBC Universal, Capital Finance and Consumer & Industrial. In January 2009, the Company acquired Interbanca S.p.A., an Italian corporate bank. In April 2008, Oil & Gas completed the acquisition of the Hydril Pressure Controls business from Tenaris."

If I could buy more, I have a big list - google, amazon, microsoft, reilance, cisco, exxon, etc. are on the top. These companies make money even during recession.

I'd buy the Kiva website: www.kiva.org.

"Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe," as the Kiva website says.

For as little as a $25 loan, you, too, can share and practice philanthropy and humanitarian aid - serving humanity on a global scale & funding your own private economic recovery program in this global recession. Loans are usually 6-12 months long. Repayment rates are excellent. And you get to re-invest or withdraw any repaid monies at the end of the loan term.

How cool is that?!

Hmmm, I also see this as difficult to answer. I think I would go against the grain and buy my own website, i.e. register a profitable domain name for a much cheaper price, invest in its development (get custom-made vector artwork that really stands out) -- this would be my priority -- and implement a unique program on it. This would be because money isn't an issue and because I'd prefer not to carry the historical baggage of someone else's creation. I would then manage it for a year or two, and then I would sell it!

I would buy a LLLL.com (four-letter domain name) -- like cuza.com -- because they are quicker to spell and are easy to remember.

Or maybe I would just end up buying Bido so I could make money off of those of you bidding on the website/domains that you chose! -- spreading out my risk, like in the video. The video will be interesting for those who want to think about websites/domains further, with CEO/President of Recall Media Group, the people behind Bido.

Twitter. It's a rising star on the internet, and everyone is getting onboard.

If a person were able to buy Twitter right now, you would have the potential to make a lot of money based solely off of the number of new people that sign up for twitter everyday.

It would probably cost less than Google or Facebook, and you'd probably see a much better percentage of return.

I would not buy Google just because it would cost so much and it would be hard to see how you could make a profit. I would look at Yahoo on the other hand because I find it easy to use and its stock had been beaten up recently. or I would find a small and up and coming website like this one and link it to other services and create my own power house and sell a lot of stock so I too could be a billionaire and have control over my life.

I would buy Facebook, simply because I would then be able to eventually shut it down and start my social networking website FreezeCrowd without having people ask me, "how it's different from Facebook." I really believe they are doing a disservice to society in the way they provide social networking as a service, and they do not help people with networking always. I am going to confidently say they are not the end all or be all of social networking. I believe that some of the things we are doing with FreezeCrowd are not only on the cutting edge, yet the way social networking should be. I would also like to see how my site would grow without them around. I know this may be harsh, but I truly believe that some things were out of order. If I were the Google founders, I'd probably say, "I wish I could buy Yahoo, and shut them down" when they first started, as everyone compared Google to Yahoo, but saw Google as an improvement in some ways.

First and foremost--- I would suggest learning --- what is the procedure for buying an website.
Second--- I would suggest to learn--- the positives and negatives of the website. For example, Whether the particular website will give good returns for the long term.
If I get a chance, I would like to buy a website such as facebook or some other social networking site which I believe there is a lot of growth in the future.
Hope it helps :)

I'd buy YouTube b/c there WILL be a way to monetize (as yet unknown) and YT will be the biggest money-maker.

Great question btw.

Twitter, i believe it has the most potential.
It has risen so fast
People have Immediate contact with there friends status, it is not like myspace or facebook where you have to go through quiz results, friend additions, ect.
Twitter could even add ad's in the future

I see lots of people saying they'd buy Google.com but then you would have to know how to run it. You would have to buy the entire company!

I.m struggling to pick one to buy... hmmm

Thats a hard one to answer. There are a couple that I would be interested in.
One would be 'Write and Inmate', they are growing faster than some of us
thought they would. Takes all kinds I guess. The one I would pick tho would
most likely be EBAY. I love to see the things people sell or try to sell. Totally
amazes me what people will pay for some things. Blows my mind. But I do
believe that would be a good investment

Wow.... Loaded question...
I'd buy this site, so you people would know who I am and love me. :)

Then I would fire Jason, and the world would know who I am, and how dumb I am.

well then Yahoo?

and it's going pretty cheap. I mean the price is right (though they turned down Microsoft bids, which amounts were more than fair).
