If you could be a real pirate would you be?

I think being a pirate would be pretty cool. Not a modern day pirate though one from back in the days with wooden ships and swords. Anybody else think it would have been pretty awsome to have been a pirate back in the day?

The old pirates were violent and cruel, much more so than the current Somali pirates. You may be thinking of privateers or buccaneers, who did much the same thing but more legally and had less reason to kill their victims.

However, there was one fellow who, because or despite a career encompassing all three, was truly admirable. I suggest you read up on William Dampier.

I wouldn't be a pirate, but being an old time naturalist would be very attractive.

It wasn't as different back in the days of Blackbeard as it might sound. Most pirates had a friendly town where they could sell their loot and buy supplies and hire whores. They might not provably 'know' where the stuff came from, but they probably had a hunch. Sometimes whole countries performed this function, as when privateers weren't treated as pirates by their home country, as long as they only pirated certain nationalities.

It would be hard for the Somali pirates without at least tacit support from parts of Somalia.

I'm not sure the change in ships and weapons makes much difference - only human storytelling has changed the past, as it were.

No, I would not be a real pirate.
I love the sea, but I would not like to spend months in the sea.
I like my apartment and seeing different people around me.

No way in the world.

Though movies and books make it look romantic, pirates are, and were, criminals. They weren't some sort of heroes, they robbed and killed.

Plus, I get sea sick too easily, so I'll be a law abiding land lubber.
