If you are trying to become an astronomer and you are a bilingual student but, you are not good enough in English what can you do?

Tip for best answer: M$1.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi, @muwafaq!

I do so understand you. You see, I'm German by birth and had to really study the English language step by step. Back then, you could only go to a language school after college to further your education or study at university.

But nowadays, there are so many possibilities with the internet. You can sign up for free online English courses and my favorite at the moment is YouTube! Yes, I'm studying Chinese there!

Then you can sign up for free podcasts to learn English and you can make friends on the internet. There are also so many articles sites that are free to read and many books and e-books too.

Yes, the secret is reading more and more about all different subjects and as you are learning you look up the words you don't understand yet.

I think one can't say that this process of learning a language takes so and so many years. No, it's a study forever, even if you are a native speaker. There are always new turns of phrases, new words or even old literature that can be enjoyed.

So just immerse yourself into listening to the videos on YouTube every day and read an article every day and soon you will see that you have improved your English enormously!

I wish you good luck!

Hi,
Both the answers are really helpful. @antjecobbett , since I already know two languages, Hindi and English, I am also trying to learn Chinese and your answer would certainly help me. Thanks.

I'm sorry, but you must learn English. English is the #1 most influential language in the world: http://www2.ignatius.edu/faculty/turner/languages.htm

Learning the English language should be a top priority for you if you expect to work at any of the world famous observation sites in the world. There are no short cuts here.

You want to become an astronomer of any merit, English is vital to your education and career. Try Pimsleur method, this method is used by the CIA for their agents to learn a language quick.

That might help you.

Try to improve your English. But you dont need to know much since astronomy is an exact science. So don't worry
