If you are being interviewed for a job and are asked, "what is your biggest weakness?" what do you say?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I say pick a strength that can sometimes be misinterpreted by others as a weakness. For example: "I tend to be stubborn about quality issues because its important to me and sometimes others I work with really have a hard time with that. I need to learn when to let go about things sometimes." (This is similar to the perfectionist idea, but instead of being "fake" about it, you are truly admitting a weakness, while showing a somewhat desirable skill.)

"Instead of confessing a weakness, describe what you like most and like least, making sure that what you like most matches up with the most important qualification for success in the position, and what you like least is not essential. "

I'm honest and admit that my personality sometimes does not lend itself to being a people person. Then I say that I have worked hard to learn how to adapt and overcome that as much as possible.

From the other side of the table, having asked that same question before, I can tell you that if someone doesn't want to admit that they have any weaknesses or doesn't know what their weaknesses are, it is a red flag (IMHO).

I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist so I must carefully assess how much effort to put into any given task to be most effective.

The guy interviewing you has interviewed plenty of people before. And absolutely everyone knows that such an answer says nothing and is complete bull.

"Answering terrible interview questions." (I wish I would have the guts to say that, but I'd probably cop out. Maybe instead you could say, "My right ankle. One hit there and I'm down for the count.")

lol i think that's quite witty. if i were the interviewer i would appreciate that. however, it is somewhat a cop out. it would totally depend upon the interviewer as to whether or not that would work.

I won't be overly negative about my weaknesses - but rather emphasize on my skills. I'll say: "I'm a team player and though my intentions are good, I can get deeply involved in a project and be late, but I'm thorough with my work and enjoy a challenge."

I would say that I have an antiauthoritarian personality, which can be good in some contexts and awful in others. Of course, I don't look for jobs where my personality is a weakness.

I used to ask this question myself and stopped as it really told me nothing about the candidate.

When I am asked I am honest, but in a very nebulous way. (Sometimes strive to hard, or put in too many hours just to polish the project to a shine when it may not be 100% needed, etc.)

Wow. The "nebulous way" part is kind of weird to me. I'm just an awful liar or actor or I'm bad at not telling the truth, sometimes very directly (without being too rude). So far, being very honest has helped me more than it's gotten me in trouble.

Maybe a better phrase would be "answer in generalities" In other words, try not to pinpoint one exact area if you can help it.

BTW, this question is a very BAD question and shouldn't really be used by anyone.

Perhaps it should be rephrased so it's more useful. I don't answer in generalities about the way I am. I have bad things and good ones, like most people. If they treat me respectfully I work well. If they don't I sabotage here and there, just a little, to get even. And perhaps this last thing is something I don't pinpoint now that I think about it.
