If the fire dept. sends you a bill for emergency services, are they double dipping, since they are paid with tax $$?

I recently had to call 911 to go to the emergency room, and had both fire and ambulance services show up. Got a bill from both for the transport to the hospital. What the heck are my taxes going towards?
Tip for best answer: M$0.20
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would pay the one that actually took me to the Hospital. But they are only covering their actual additional expenses for fuel and what ever they did. They have their estimated costs which include paperwork and processing. You are not actually paying for their time. But why does 911 send both in your Town? So as stated I would only pay the one that took me to the Hospital and send a Thank You note to the other and explain redundant services were unnecessary.

Your taxes pay for the Fire Dept, along with other things. However, governments do not depend entirely on taxes, they also charge fees for some services.

There has been a recent trend for municipal fire departments to charge for their services. The theory seems to be that the insurance companies will pay for it. That way your taxes only pay for the general maintenance of the Fire Dept. Then the municipality doesn't have to raise taxes as much. The practice is controversial and banned in some states.

You should turn the bill over to your health insurance company and let them argue about it with the Fire Dept or town.
