If the Aztecs had chinampas with a lot of food how did they starve?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If you're referring to the Fall of Tenochtitlan it was not due to starvation, the Aztec empire fell after being overtaken by Smallpox and later a Spanish Conquest led by Hernan Cortes

During the fall of Tenochititlan in 1521, many Aztecs did starve. This was due to the fact that Tenochtitlan was built on an island in the middle of a lake. This made it an easy target for European style seige warfare. The Spanish built small ships that they used for day and night bombardment of the city. Part of the strategy of seige warfare is to destroy the food supply and block any outside supply route. This was done by destroying the chinampas, and destroying the Great Aquaduct that brought a fresh supply of water from springs at Chapultepec.
However, most Aztecs didnt starve. Many died from smallpox, bubonic plague and other european diseases brought by the Spanish. Others were simply killed while fighting the Spanish and thier allies, or were executed after the conquest. Post conquest starvation was more prevalent, as those who survived war and disease became slaves and were usually treated with less dignity than dogs.
