if someone puts your name as a reference to either borrow money or get any form of credit and then defaults, does that affect your credit?

today i got a call from a collection agency looking for a former friend of mine. they said that she had put either mine or my ex's name down as a reference and somehow got my home phone number. not only am i very upset that she used my name or my ex's name, because we departed worlds on very bad terms, but i'm worried that somehow her financial mismanagements will affect me negatively.
can this do anything to my credit? the collections agency seemed very understanding that i have nothing to do with that woman for over a decade and took my number off her lists, but i can't help but worry.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

If she didn't have your social and you aren't listed as a co-signer, then you are safe and it won't hurt your credit in the least bit.

Collection agencies break rules. They will call people's children and threaten the kids with sending their parents to jail. They'll call anyone they can and try many different angles to collect.

You and your credit should be safe.

I hope you keep up with your credit reports. Each of the "BIG 3" agencies gives one freebie credit report per year. You can order them all at once with the "Annual Credit Report Request Form" which is free. The form is available at http://ftc.gov/credit and www.annualcreditreport.com. You will get all three through this form (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian). The form is simple. You just need your basic personal info. The last item, you need to check the boxes for Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. I got this information from my "Debt Cures" book which was very helpful.

HTH!

Thanks,

Jennifer

You said it perfectly! Besides just having your name & social... there would also have to be a signature in order to take any responsibility. Thanks Jen

This happened to me as well. A reference is only used as a way to get in touch with a customer that has defaulted on their loan and refuses to contact them. It will not affect your credit at all and you obviously have the right to give them no information about whomever used you as a reference.

no, nothing can happen because an old friend of me and my bf did the same and i thought about the same thing as well. since we were only REFERENCE for god knows what, she was trying to use us as witness of some sort. but the bank told us that we have nothing to worry about because if her credit was wacked we wont be damage since we dont share credits with her in anyway. so your safe :)
