If money were no object, which cell phone would you buy and why?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Nokia N900 is a mobile Internet device and phone, from Nokia based on the Maemo platform, superseding the N810. It was launched at Nokia World on 2 September 2009 and was released on 11 November 2009 in the United States and 9 European countries. It runs Maemo 5 Linux as its operating system and is the first Nokia device based upon the TI OMAP3 microprocessor with ARM Cortex-A8 core. Unlike the Internet Tablets preceding it, the Nokia N900 will be the first Maemo device to include phone functionality (quad-band GSM and 3G UMTS). It functions as a 5 mega pixel camera, a portable media player, and a mobile Internet device with email and web browsing.

I have a samsung instinct and use almost all the features. 3G data, free GPS, TV, and all. It doesnt cost too much. I dont care about the apps too much.
Personally I wouldnt spend too much on a cell phone, they become obsolete in no time.
Choose a provider who doesnt rob you every month and with the best coverage where you live and work/commute.
Choose a device that meets your basic needs like you said. It is just a phone to communicate plus additional features when you need them.
The above options are good if I can get one for <$100 and <$50-60 MRC
And also it depends where you live (country). I would buy a GSM phone if you travel a lot around the globe.
