The problems the first colonists would face would be quite daunting, even if the aforementioned resources were readily available. The distance from earth, and her wealth of resources, both physical and technological, would make solving the many problems they would be sure to face difficult at best. Even in situations where the problems are fairly well-known here on earth, the most unexpected and disastrous surprises crop up from time to time. Add in the many and sundry unknowns mars would present and the "interesting times" would be multiplied many-fold.
I would jump heartily at the chance to help solve these problems alongside like-minded individuals.
A very well written and researched science fiction trilogy would be the Mars series by Kim Stanley Robinson (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars). The science is pretty good and the writing is great (end advertising).
