If mac is better why windows is still the market leader ?

Apple had it all in the late 70's and early 80's, but mistakenly believed that the Personal Computer would be mostly "personal". They largely ignored the business market and when they did address it (Apple III, Lisa) they missed the mark.
The saying in business used to go "No one ever got fired for buying IBM." So when IBM teamed up with Microsoft for the PC operating system, the die was cast. Business buyers of PC's didn't particularly care about ease of use or technical advantages. They wanted cheap, easy to maintain boxes that they could deploy on a mass basis with a major company to stand behind them and IBM delivered.
Work PC's became so prevalent they pushed downward into the household. rather then the other way around. People bought PC's at home that were the same as the ones they used at work (it didn't hurt that rampant software piracy meant they needn't spend another dime).
An oh yeah, Apple fired Steve Jobs. Sure, things were already going badly, but this sent the company into a death spiral punctuated by a series of ineffective chiefs.
All the while MS kept pushing along, sucking just a little less with each passing version and getting more and more people used to the fact that this is just "how it is" with computers.
I lived through it ;-)

M$As I see it, there is a fundamental difference in a Windows machine and a Mac: I can put Windows on whatever hardware I want, that will run it. But unless you are going to hack OS X and violate the EULA, if you buy OS X it is going to go on Apple hardware. I think many people like the freedom of choice too much to be locked into a vertically integrated solution, regardless of how elegant it is. If Apple were to release OS X to be able to run on hardware that is capable of it, it would gain a great deal of ground in the desktop OS market, but they don't seem to want that. Maybe Apple wants to maintain control over the hardware to minimize support costs, or maybe for quality assurance reasons. Maybe they just don't want their logo on butt-ugly common hardware; I don't know.
Linux, in my opinion is not ready to be the market leader for pretty much the opposite reasons. For one thing, there are too many choices for the average user (check out distrowatch.com if you don't think so). Also, my mom is never going to run anything that requires her to compile, or install libraries, or whatever. She can install stuff in windows if she has to. Most importantly though, IMO, is the lack of support from vendors, both hardware and software, although this is vastly improved from 10 years ago.
just an opinion

M$When business buys a machine, they tend to stick with that machine so their business applications will still work. If they changed machines, they would have to find new applications, transfer all the info into the new system, etc.
Secondly... individuals will buy home machines they can use for work tasks as well. This is why I have a PC and a Mac on my desk right now.
I'm not going to get into the "Which is better?" question. As with any tool, each has it's plusses and minuses. I'm a Mac head, but I know the Mac's limitations...

M$Microsoft has already covered most of the government organizations including Schools, even Universities. If Apple wants more market share, they should try to focus more on cooperate users rather than their typical fan base. Then again, Mac will just become another PC if they take that road. It's simply a paradox.

M$Windows comes on just about everything else.
Think of it like this:
Apple - Mac Os X
Dell - Windows
Gateway - Windows
Acer - Windows
Sony - Windows
Until Apple decides to sell the OS to anyone it'll be tough for it to be a market leader. But just because it isn't doesn't mean its not better. One might argue that because apple has such control over it they can better control the user experience, and if you like that user experience then it's going to be fantastic for you!

M$Most folks do not recall CP/M as the earliest OS because we have had DOS, either PC or MS flavors, in our faces for so long. Many people say this happened for a number of reasons from the makers of CP/M refusing to enter into a deal with IBM which was as slanted toward IBM as Microsoft was willing to give up with DOS, to CP/M being seen as a specialty OS compared to the broad appeal of DOS. In the end, most people feel CP/M, later know as DR-DOS was the better of the two OSes but DOS and then Windows won.
Mac VS PC can be boiled down to several similar decisions and Apple only missed a painful death by getting Steve Jobs back at the helm. Microsoft has made it's own blunders since that time and did not defend itself against Apples beautiful and spiteful PC vs Mac campaign allowing Apple to define Microsoft rather than controlling their own message. Apple is gaining share, but I don't think we will see Apple "Hardware" take over any time soon except in the portables area.
On a side not, the whole PC vs. Mac argument is flawed at its core because all computers using Intel chips are "technically" PCs the argument should really be at the OS level, OSX vs. Vista/Windows7

M$As far as which is better, I like both for different reasons, but as mentioned, APple controls both hardware and software and so can offer what is *usually* a smoother experience. There have been many exceptions to this, however.

M$Plus, because of Microsoft's established market share, many people stick to windows simply because of the convenience of everything working together and not having to go through the trouble of switching (and learning) an entirely new platform.

M$Consider the market share that Ferrari has. Does that mean that they aren't as good as the Honda Accord which sells way more cars?

M$For the majority of people, an Accord is more economical (significantly cheaper), has more utility (fit more people in it), more comfortable, more practical, and, is, in fact, a better vehicle.
You need to consider all aspects of what you're getting in to, in the case of cars, utility, value, economy, size, all play a huge factor in the purchase, even outside of modest budget constraints.
years of dissatisfaction, and distrust of the Apple Corporation

You are on the mark. Apple still sees the Mac as a toy/entertainment machine.
I use a Mac Pro. I have had it about 8 months. I can only use it for personal stuff like this because there is still no serious business related software. and Imagine my shock when this 2,700 machine has only ONE free USB port. Four total but the mouse, keyboard, and monitor use three of them. What do I so with my printer, my label printer, my scanner, my camera, etc? Even the windows programs that are available in Mac versions have significantly less functionality than the Windows versions. I still have to use PCs to make a living.
Well, I'm glad you agree with my premise but personally I don't believe this is the situation anymore. True, Apple still doesn't care much about the "generic" corporate market (basically word processors, accountants and e-mail) but it is certainly not the case (in my experience) that Mac programs have less functionality than their windows counterparts.
Anyway, this isn't a pro-con mac thread on a bulletin board so I'll stop now!
