Probably for reasons similar to why space-ships in movies make neat sound effects even though there can be no sound in space (lacking air to carry sound waves). It makes things more entertaining. Stretching out things makes them look more interesting and sometimes oddly attractive than compressing them, which would tend to make everything and everyone look fat.
