IF Jello gels, why doesn't pudding "pud?"
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

'Pudding' comes from roots indicating a belly, swelling, or lump. Puddings were originally any item boiled in a bag or sack to be cooked, cf. sausages.
Old kinds of pudding (like bread pudding, rice pudding) were most likely cooked or steamed in this manner. Nowadays, there are lots of sweet dessert applications for pudding (but it is, traditionally, boiled and then cooled to thicken the mixture).
So, in a sense, it does 'pud' while Jello gels.
