If I am a very experienced wedding photographer moving to a new area, how do I get introduced to wedding planners and hotel event managers?

...trying to get on their preferred partner lists. A sales script or meeting call plan would be great. Any other strategies?

Everybody has great answers so far. I just wanted to add one.

I would go around to photographers in the area who DON'T do weddings and show off some of your work and ask if they would recommend you. Leave plenty of cards/brochures for them. Maybe even promise some finder fees.

Definitely one route that you should follow! Be careful though, as some folks are more of the "the market is a pie with limited slices, so don't poach mine" versus "Hey, let's help each other and create win-win!" In this business climate, they may be looking for ways to expand their market, and weddings are definitely one sector that seems to be recession resistant.

My first stop would be the local chamber of commerce to become a member. My second stop would be a scan of Craig's List (if they have a section for your locale) to see who's advertising their business. Hopefully some of the listings will be open to "commercial solicitation" in which I would reach out via email or phone call to introduce myself.

If your location/market isn't a large city (and maybe even if it is!), I'd try visiting the local bakeries, specifically ones that specialize in making wedding cakes. I'd also look into the local formal wear shops (not the chains) to see if they have planning books or portfolios in which you can advertise.

Other possible networking opportunities:
  • Local DJ's and live music bands
  • Jewelers
  • Furniture Rentals
  • Popular local venues for weddings (parks, historical properties, etc)
  • Caterers and restaurants that cater from the "back" (might include some chains, you'd be surprised!)
  • Local churches

I think this is a great answer! One addition: If wedding photography isn't your main source of income, and you can afford to, run an add on craigslist saying you are new to the area and would like to establish some connections and are giving away a few freebies. Obviously the package wouldn't come with prints, but maybe just a disc of the images you take, this would allow you to come in contact with all the "wedding people"

I would attend the local Wedding events. In my area we have about 10 bridal shows a year. This is a good chance to meet several of the big players in the area. I would also find the most popular churches in the area and ask at the church office for the wedding planners number. they will be happy to give it to you most of the time. Do remember that small give-a-ways go a long way with these people. They don't get much attention from any one but the bride.

If you haven't moved to your new location yet, you can start networking with sites like craigslist.org under "services" and "community".
Once you have moved, you can sign up at the next Chamber of Commerce after hours party where people love to network.
I would also find all the local wedding planners in your new area and just drop in on them with your website info or brochure with pictures.
The best networking is done face to face. Good luck and Congrats!
