If European Hockey players were not allowed in the National Hockey League, how would it affect play and would play quality diminish?
The National Hockey League has expanded across North America and is experiencing attendance problems in multiple cities. The influx of European players has had a largely positive impact on the quality of play. If the Russian, Czech, Swedish and other import players were not allowed to play or were limited, what effect would it have on overall play and would the league have to reduce franchises to maintain the current level of skill? Would not being able to see players such as Ovechkin and Datsyuk impact fan support?

I think that maybe the fan base would change. European players bring so much finesse to the game. They play the game how its supposed to be played, smoothly, with speed and clean hits.
American players, some, not all, tend to bring more of the, how should I say it, muscle to the game. They bring the physical aspect of being big hitters and just more physical brute.
I think in cities, where hockey is so dominant a sport when kids are growing up, the fan base is of those who want to see the finesse, and they want the quality play. The cities where it is declining, I think, is of those who want to see the fighting and whatnot, and the people there, just may not understand the game as much as those who grew up with it, so they don't appreciate the clean, crisp, aspects of it.
