If digital competency comes from tinker/fail-friendly personality, how do you teach it?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've rarely tinkered with (non-digital aspects) of science, but apparently I've "learned" it, with over 15 years experience (public schooling, mostly). And I have learned, but in comparing this to my level of competency with computers through experience, I clearly have a stronger hold on digital competency.

Essentially, I think public schooling teaches certain subjects without allowing much true tinkering, so subjects can be "taught," and this method is widely accepted, but whether or not this is correct in general is another question. Textbooks and lectures is one route, but without coupling this with a "lab," a true ability lacks, and without coupling this with the ability for a student to explore on his or her own, even more true ability lacks.

I think essentially building the foundation within a student to give them the knowledge and confidence to explore on his or her own is what a teacher should strive for, in this field, and many others as well.

$.02 with a lot more to say on education.
