The answer would likely depend on what stage of the war this flight would have taken place. During the first half of the war, such a duty would likely have fallen to the Messerchmitt Bf-109 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_109 ). Later in the war, it might well have been done by the Focke-Wulf FW-190 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fw_190 ). However, there were very many versions and sub-versions of the Junkers 88, some of which were fighters themselves, and might not have required escorts (see http://www.aviastar.org/air/germany/ju-88.php ).
