I will only have time to visit one city in Austria. Where will my time be best spent, and why? Vienna? Salzburg? Another city or burg?

Although I am planning a trip to Europe for business, I will be able to eke out enough time to visit Austria, a country I have not seen before. My time will be limited and I would like to focus my energy on one place. Where would you recommend and why?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The wisest thing to do, of course, is to do a little research based on your interests. Think of what you are interested in (art, music, museums, hiking, gardens, etc), then see where the best of those things is.
That being said, Salzburg is my absolute favorite city in all of Europe. It's beautiful. The old quarter is closed to motor traffic and the streets are cobblestone. Music drips from every corner. They light up the facades of the beautiful stone buildings along the river at night and everything is completely magical. It is very touristy, but if you only have a short time to visit, that can be fun. There is a lot to explore, in the city and around in the surrounding mountains. There are organized tours you can join or just venture out on your own. I thought it was neat to see the Do-Re-Mi Park and the abbey where the real Maria von Trapp lived. Although Vienna had some beautiful landmarks, it didn't have the charm of Salzburg. So, I recommend Salzburg!

Visit Werfen, about 40 km south of Salzburg, and visit the biggest Ice Caves in the World! (Eisriesenwelt).
