If it was my brother and he had asked me, I would have told him the truth. I would have pointed to the different body parts and explained the procedure using acceptable language. I know exactly what would have happened. He would have said, "Oh." And then he would have immediately lost interest and gone to play with his toys.
The worst time to tell kids about sex is when their bodies are changing and they are uncomfortable about those changes. They need to be told well in advance of puberty so that they have no immediate need to worry about the information. They need to be given pictures of the opposite sex so that they know what the different body parts are. They need to be comfortable with the concept of sex long before they are capable of sex, so that the mystery of a relationship is not in the physical nature of sex, but in the emotional (and perhaps spiritual) nature of sex. In this way, sex becomes an empathetic connection with another human being rather than a way to relieve ourselves.
If it was my sister, I would also tell her this.
I have to add, that one of the most important reasons that I would have told my little brother or sister this is because I am absolutely sure that our parents would not tell them at any age.

If he's 5, I wouldn't get too... technical. I would say it's something that older people do when they love each other, and that when they love each other it can make a baby in the woman's stomach.

It's not a great idea to watch a PG-13 movie with a 5-year old.
But this seems like a good approach to explaining if you must. Possibly he'll just forget about it though if you didn't answer there and then.
