I was once told never to put used coffee grounds down a sink with a garbage disposal as food trash. Anyone else ever been told that?

Yes, it's true that coffee grounds can clog MOST garbage disposals. The clumping and swelling effect of the grounds will easily clog and burn out the motors, ruining your garbage disposal and causing pipe problems.

PLUS, coffee grounds might not be a good idea for septic systems.

However, you'll also hear conflicting advice that coffee grounds sent through the garbage disposal help clean the system and make everything smell nice!

So is this true?

Sometimes - but only if your garbage disposal manual recommends it. Sometimes certain plumbing systems and disposals can handle grounds, where others can't.

If you want to be on the safe side, I'd just put the coffee grounds in the garbage can or in the compost heap.
