While the Twilight novels are popular, I don't think the first three Vampire Chronicles by Ann Rice can be beat. The characters are complex and interesting, and the books are hard to put down. She does the best job of creating what it is to become a vampire, the difficulties of being made vampire when only a child, and exactly how difficult it is to kill one.
The settings vary from ancient Egypt, to 1800s New Orleans, to contemporary San Francisco. The movies, for all their special effects, didn't do them justice - the tale is too nuanced and the interaction too complex. Wonderful stuff! In order, then:
1: Interview with the Vampire
2: The Vampire LeStat
3: Queen of the Damned.
Dark, thought-provoking, and not for the squeamish. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
