Can I use quick cooking oats instead of old fashion oats in granola?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Oats come in three forms.
- Groats - whole oats with outer husk removed - longest to cook
- Steel cut or Scotch oats - sliced into several pieces - cooks faster
- Rolled oats - crushed flat - several thicknesses - cook faster if flatter
Instant oats are just very flat rolled oats also ground a little or cut . Cook the fastest
All are oats. All the same - just different cooking time and slightly different texture in the mouth.
Substitute one for the other as you see fit.
Put them in water overnight before cooking will allow them to cook faster.
Oats will cook fastest by putting them into boiling water - not by cooking them in water. The fastest way to prepare oats is to put flat rolled oats (or instant oats) into a bowl of boiling water and let stand for 1 minute.

In granola - they are all the same - its just about texture and consistency. The more finely ground Instant Oats will soak up the liquid faster. so it'll be a bit more mushy...
