I want to learn more about my heritage, so any information would be wonderful.

Most libraries have genealogy research website available and usually have a library version of ancestry.com this will allow you to look up old bit records in many cases or census records from 1930 or before, and marriage records, you can also look up certain last names to see if they were changed.
I would also check the state and province records they usually have pretty good informantion on this if you do enough reseach.
