I want to host my own web gallery on a subdomain of mine to share photos with friends and family. What gallery software do you recommend?
No fancy features such as shopping carts are required. Even a method of adding comments isn't really required.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

These are not on your domain software, but I wondered if you had considered them as free options using publicly available systems with good quality photos. An amateur photographer recommended them to for the quality of the photos on there, and that it's free.
I just wondered whether you had seen http://www.webshots.com/ - so many people use it and the quality is good, can you set photos for private just for friends and family for private viewing I wonder? here is the link for family there http://family.webshots.com/
http://www.ning.com this is a free social networking community, anyone can create a ning, then make it private so that you get to approve anyone who enters it. Their photo capability is good plus you can discuss and each person can make their own pages and send notes, etc. A fan site that is a ning and is very good is the Dallas Mavericks http://friends.mavs.com where you can see the photos, but you can set up a Ning any way you want. Here is their about page for Ning http://about.ning.com/

M$It is PHP based and you can upload photos via FTP. It's pretty easy to use.
Other options include
Gallery http://gallery.menalto.com/ which is bloated.
Coppermine http://coppermine-gallery.net/ which looks too overcomplicated
