i want to have my 2 connections, one for internet and one for local network.
what i would like to do is have one of the 2 network connections go to the internet only and the other network connection go just to lan devices. basically so i can monitor just internet bandwidth usage.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Option 1 - to use a second router, to bypass media pc for internet access on other PCs.

Option 2 - to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the media PC and connect directly to the DSL/Cable modem. Connect the second LAN port to a router or switch accordingly.

In both options, you can use Networx for Internet usage monitoring on any LAN interface. I use this free sw and is very good.

Some routers let you configure two different subnets or special routing option. Not sure if yours has that feature. If yes, this could be much simpler.

M$Here's the best link I've found for what to do: http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2004/110104gearhead.html.
Google windows multihoming for more information.

M$Thanks. I thought of including some diagrams in the answer after returning from work.
Stanar by all means post your information as a direct reply to Gotspeed's question, you have more information than i do and deserve best answer credit.
"For this to definitely work you need two physical NIC cards, not just one card with two jacks. "
Two jacks mean two physical ports with different MAC addresses. so he has what is needed for dual homing.
@gotspeed - Dual homing on the same physical network with the same IP subnet will not work for your requirement, because of the same default gateway for both the adapters.
Here is a support page for Windows on the Expected Behavior of Multiple Adapters on Same Network.
can you provide more info on your network like the router type and how this pc and the others are connected? and also what OS?
You might be able to accomplish what you are looking for by manipulating the route and metrics. You can use "route print" command for this, for help, use "route print /?" command to add/modify the ip routes.
I have never tried dual homing a windows on the same network, so to provide a solution I need more info.

M$good point. I agree with you on using a single NIC to avoid a complex set up and trouble shooting if any issue arises in future.
I dont think the asker is worried about saturating the port, but just wants to monitor the usage.
The sw tool on the link seems to be good and it should work if the requirement is just to see the usage.
Since this is a shareware and $70 to buy, is there a freeware with similar features?
Keeping it all simple you could spend all day looking on http://www.smartcode.com/db/search.php?query=bandwidth+monitoring+control&p=1 trying out tools. Most of the simple one's I loaded were terrible.
There are some other more complex tools that are free but probably not worth the effort. One free one that might work is "NetLimiter 2 Monitor", the free version is at http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php and it even works on Vista.
maxing it out isn't the problem its the amount of data im moving. its to a 1tb nas so moving 150+ gbs to it isn't ab normal.

i was kinda looking for something like change the dns settings on one adapter so it won't use it for the net. something that would change how windows works.
im using a shaplus for the monitor right now and my monthly is already up to 60gb in a week. so i don't know whats local network and whats internet.
sorry about not replying i thought i set up mahalo to email me on reply and never got one.
this is on windows 7 64bit to take advantage of the 6 gigs of ram.
no problem. let me know if this was useful.
DNS settings are for the system and not based on the interface. Routing is based on the default gateway and metrics set for each interface.
So in your case, like @bitmanx commented, you can use netlimiter should work. I tried it and you monitor usage for Internet, local network or the computer. This will also keep the set up simple.
