I want to get a dog or a cat, but my boyfriend is allergic. Do I have any options?

I've hear of hypoallergenic animals, but are they really safe for an allergic person?

I'm more of a dog person than a cat person, so I'm going to answer this question under the assumption that you'll get a dog. Unfortunately, according to Scientific American, no dog or cat is truly "hypoallergenic" though there are breeds whose saliva and proteins won't cause your boyfriend as much trouble as others. You should get a dog that doesn't shed that often, such as a Schnauzer, Terrier or Lhasa Apso. Also, make sure to wash the dog once a week, which will get all those allergens off of their skin.

I think the Lhasa Apso's hypoallergenicness varies dog to dog. Certain breeders maintain lines that exhibit this genetic characteristic. Being a Lhasa Apso does not guarantee the dog will be hypoallergenic.

My mom has a Lhasa Apso, so maybe I could expose her (the dog, not my mom) to my boyfriend for a while and see what happens. Thanks for the info!

The Obamas are considering just this hypoallergenic pet question as we speak and although it is, in my opinion, an ugly creature, the ancient Incas' Peruvian Hairless Dog is an option.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brunogirin/67912934/)

either. Plus, I think the reason I'd want a dog is to have it be cuddly and cute--unfortunately the cuddly fur is the problem.

Don't forget about cats. Some good breeds for you might be Balinese or Oriental Shorthari.

Dump your boyfriend(s) and get a walrus. He is an unworthy guy to not sacrifice his time by getting allergy theraphy for you. Then get the dog/mop below and walk it outside his house for months
