I want to detect the frequency of alpha waves without using any specialized medical hardware. Thoughts or ideas?

Alpha waves are between 8 and 12 Hz depending on the person and their state. I'm doing some un-funded research and need a way to pick them up and measure their frequency several times a second. This needs to be on the cheap side...if I had access to an EEG or MRI I wouldn't be asking HaD.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Have a look at the OpenEEG project. They already have the hardware and the software around. And that is cheaper, than buying mindflex, although involves some DIY.

It's still pretty expensive and to be honest way overkill for my application. I may just end up doing some circuit testing on myself on this one.
