I use Gmail but when I click an email address on a web page Outlook Express launches. Can it launch Gmail?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In Firefox go to Tools / Options and click on Applications. Under content type look for (or add) mailto
Then select "use Gmail" as the application default for any mailto links you may click while you browse.

M$"So you need a stub program to act as a liaison between the OS and website".
You forgot that Google and Firefox are "friends". So in this case the stub program is Firefox.
Interesting idea though, would be to use Open Service Description as a method of associating protocol references with a web service or website.
Because Gmail is a web based email there is no way to associate it with a mailto: reference in windows. So you need a stub program to act as a liaison between the OS and website. In the case of gmail the Gmail Notifier above does this. It also puts a little icon in your system tray that tells you if you have new mail waiting for you.
I voted yes because this is definitely the easiest and best answer. The some of the others below probably will work but I know this one will because it's what I use.

M$Similarly an email address is by default configured to open with Outook in your computer. Since Gmail is a web based and not an application on your computer, you cannot ( in normal circumstances ) click on it to open your gmail. What you can do however is configure your gmail to outlook - you will now be able to access your email in your local machine without connected to the internet and also use outlook to reply to your emails and then connect to the internet to send them out. Many people use outlook as a front end to their email. It is quite easy to configure your gmail to outlook. For detailed instructions you can refer to the following link
