If you haven't watched the TV shows, you might not get a few subtle lines spoken in the movie, but that should not deter the quality of you watching it.
I would suggest you start watching the TV show in the order they were released. You can easily get them from Netflix other rental companies. Both Gillian Answerson and David Duchovny have proven themselves in this show, season after season.

Star Trek is a phenomenal movie, and appeased the old fans of the TV show. However, X-Files simply did not.
