I recently reinstalled Windows; in the control panel, if it says "no audio device" under "Sounds and audio devices," what do I need?>
In addition, I've already:
1. Checked the control panel audio settings to make sure it wasn't muted, etc.
&
2.checked my speaker connections.
WHAT NEXT?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Then I suggest downloading the audio driver from here:

Then re-install it. Also, be sure to restart. A forum with someone with the exact same problem with the same machine said that with the BIOS update from Dell too, that it fixed the problem.
If this doesn't work, check back and I'll tell you some more things to try.

M$I assume you are using an updated driver. After rebooting try installing the driver for sound again.
Try the following too:
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Component Services>> Services. Make sure audio is enabled.
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Administrative Tools>> Services>> Windows Audio. Make sure "Windows Media" service is running. If it's not, right click on this service and select "Start".
Go to: Start>> Control Panel>> Sounds and Audio Device Properties. Be sure that the "Mute" checkbox is unchecked
you could also try to use the Sound Troubleshooter on your PC.
paste this in your browser

Another control you can use to help diagnose problems with sound, graphics and is dxdiag.. go to Start/ Run... and type in dxdiag. Wait, it takes a moment. This control has several tabs that have diagnostic tests to help you find and fix sound and graphics problems.
