I read that a firm mattress is the best kind to sleep on if you have a bad back. Does anyone have any advice?

Is there a specific type or brand that would be best. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The positive (or negative) effects of a firm mattress on a bad back depend specifically on what is wrong with your back.

Once you identify exactly what is wrong, you'll be able to try a range of mattresses in the category you need. There are a variety of "firm" mattresses, many with support in the specific area that you require.

A good mattress means the difference between being healthy and not for a lot of people and as a result, there are specialty shops located all over the world. These shops will loan you a single mattresses for you to try. When you find the "perfect" one, you purchase the size you want. To locate the shops in your area, talk with your doctor, chiropractor or massage therapist.

The bottom line however, is that it is very important for people with back problems to try the right mattresses first and then make a careful purchase.

"HARD mattresses, which have for years been prescribed by doctors for patients suffering from back pain, could do far less good than softer beds, research has shown."

The medical study bellow recommends you get a "medium-firm" mattress, with a rating of 5.6 in the European scale of mattress softness.

Okay, I just went and tried out the Sleep Number bed (it has a store near where I work). OMG, it is nice. You can adjust it so it is just right.

What amazed me is that these are not expensive beds. They have different versions that average in price of about 1700. (Not an exact quote). I thought they were WAY more expensive.

This will be the next bed I get. You should try one out.

I recommend medium firm mattresses for bad backs. I find that mattresses can be too hard, but you need a harder than normal mattress for additional support.

A great deal also depends on your sleep position...while a firm mattress may do wonderfully for someone that sleeps on their back, it is unlikely to accomplish the same results for someone that sleeps on their side or even stomach.. Other important considerations include the size and shape of the sleeper; very thing people or obese persons may have special needs and considerations that should be taken into account. Another important aspect is the type of pillow used - the best mattress won't work nearly as well if the pillow is the wrong type for your sleep position. Pillows are also made with sleep position in mind; stomach sleepers = very mild fill, back and side sleepers mild to dense fill.

The best mattresses if you have back problems are the Tempur Pedic memory foam mattreses. The foam offers a firm enough support to help aleviate back problems but it does much more. It molds around your body and helps distribute pressure more evenly so you don't toss and turn as much in your sleep because of pain caused in the pressure points (for example shoulder and hip if you are sleeping on your side)

They are a bit more pricey than the regular mattresses but heck we spend a third of our life in bed. I decided it's worth the investment and I'm really happy. I have a pretty sedentary lifestyle and spend a lot of time in front of the computer and I was starting to have some problems with my back.

Here are a few testimonials about the health benefits from their website:
http://www.tempurpedic.ca/en/testimonials/medical_testimonials3.php

The only problem I have now is sleeping over at my friends or family's place. It's just not the same going back to a regular mattress after your body gets conditioned to the comfort of the memory foam mattresses.

Take care,
Marcel

"When compared to the patients who slept on a firm mattress, patients who slept on the medium-firm mattresses reported reduced incidents of back pain in bed, reduced back pain upon rising from the bed, and reduced back pain related to disability. The study results indicated that a medium-firm mattress provides a better balance between back support and comfort for lower back pain than a firm mattress. "

That has been highly debated. There was a good show about that on Penn and Teller Bullsh*t. Yes, the show is quite rude, but it does have good information. The final answer was just to try out mattresses and see what feels good, that spending a lot of money on a mattress is not necessary. They showed a blow-up mattress as a good choice.

You should talk to a doctor or chiropractor about this, and test out the beds before sleeping on them. Everyone has a different preference in mattresses.
